INSIGHTS
Behavior is information. What happens when we get curious about what it is telling us?
Resistant. Defensive. Disengaged. Controlling. Micromanaging. Unmotivated.
These words can describe behavior we see at work. They can also end the inquiry too soon.
What if behavior is information?
When people are not responding the way an organization expected, the first instinct is often to communicate again. Sometimes that is exactly what is needed. Sometimes the barrier is somewhere else entirely.
People may understand the change and lack confidence. They may support it and lack time. A manager may be reinforcing a different priority. The process may be cumbersome. The tool may not fit the workflow. Trust may already be low.
The useful question is not simply, “Why won’t people do this?” It is: What is the behavior telling us, what conditions might be contributing to it, and what can the organization influence?
This is not about diagnosing employees or assigning a psychological explanation to every workplace response. It is about becoming more disciplined about understanding the problem before prescribing the solution.
